1. WHAT IS A „COOKIE”?
A „cookie” is a small-sized file, consisting of letters and numbers, which is stored on the computer, mobile device or other user equipment used to access the Internet. The cookie is installed after a request is issued by a webserver to a browser (e.g., among others: Internet Explorer, Chrome, Mozilla Firefox) and is completely “passive” (it does not contain software, viruses or spyware and cannot access information stored on user’s hard drive).
A cookie has two parts: the name and the content or the value of the cookie. Moreover, the lifespan of a cookie is determined. Technically speaking, only the webserver sending the cookie can access it again when the user returns on the website associated to that webserver.
The cookie stores important information that improves the web-browsing experience (e.g. the settings of a website’s display language, keeping a user logged in to the webmail account, online banking security, keeping items in the shopping basket).
Cookies themselves do not request personal data in order to be used and, in most cases, do not identify Internet users personally. There are two major categories of cookies:
- Session cookies – these are stored temporarily in the cookie folder of the web browser, which remembers them until the user leaves the respective website or closes the browser window (e.g. when logging in/out to/from a webmail account or social networks).
- Persistent cookies – these are stored on the hard drive of a computer or other device (and in general, depend on their preset lifespan). Persistent cookies include the cookies placed by another website than the one the user is visiting at that moment – known as “third party cookies” – which may be used anonymously to store the interests of a user, so as to deliver the most relevant advertisements to that user.
Cookies can also be differentiated according to the managing entity; thus, they may be placed by the website owner (in this case, DK Expo SRL) or by others.
Depending on their purpose, cookies are:
- Technical cookies (necessary for browsing)
- Performance cookies (they collect information about how readers use a website, such as the most popular pages, which method of linking pages is most effective, and whether users are seeing error messages on webpages)
- Functionality cookies (they remember your choices to improve your experience)
- Advertising cookies (management of advertising spaces) or behavioural advertising cookies (online advertising).
